How to Reset Your Garmin Watch: Soft Reset & Factory Reset Guide 2026

By Dr. Krishna Athmakuri, Co-Founder & CEO, Clearcals | Updated May 2026

Resetting your Garmin watch is one of the most reliable ways to fix freezing, syncing failures, GPS issues, or unexpected behaviour — without sending the device in for service. It's also the required step before selling or gifting your watch to someone else.

There are three types of reset on Garmin watches, and they do very different things. Choosing the wrong one can erase your activity history unnecessarily, or leave your data on a watch you're selling. This guide covers all three — with model-specific steps for the most common Garmin watches sold in India.

The Three Types of Garmin Reset

Reset TypeWhat It DoesErases Data? When to Use
Soft reset (restart)Reboots the watch — like restarting a phoneNoThe watch is frozen, unresponsive, or slow
Reset SettingsRestores default settings (brightness, alerts, GPS format, etc.)No — keeps activities and health dataGPS, display, or notification settings are behaving oddly
Factory reset (Delete Data and Reset Settings)Wipes everything and returns the watch to its new-out-of-the-box stateYes — all activities, settings, and personal data erasedSelling/gifting your watch, persistent software issues

Most people searching for "how to reset" actually want a factory reset or a restart. Read through the options below before proceeding.

How to Soft Reset (Restart) Your Garmin Watch

A soft reset simply reboots the watch. No data is deleted. Use this first whenever your watch is frozen, lagging, or not responding to button presses or touch.

For touchscreen models (Venu SQ 2, Vivoactive 5, Vivoactive 6):

  1. Press and hold the side button for 10–15 seconds.
  2. The watch will power off and restart automatically.
  3. If a Power Off option appears on screen, tap it, wait 10 seconds, then press the button to turn it back on.

For button-only models (Instinct 2, Instinct 3, Forerunner 165, Forerunner 265):

  1. Press and hold the upper-right button (LIGHT/POWER) for 10–15 seconds.
  2. The watch will reboot automatically.
  3. On Instinct models, you can also hold the upper-left button (LIGHT) for a few seconds to trigger a restart.

A soft reset doesn't clear any data, personal settings, or paired devices. If the watch is completely unresponsive and won't restart with a button hold, plug it into its charger — most Garmin watches will power on when connected to power.

How to Reset Settings on Your Garmin Watch (Keeps Activity Data)

Reset Settings restores your watch's configuration — display brightness, GPS satellite mode, notification settings, units, alerts — back to factory defaults. Your recorded activities, health data, training history, and personal profile are not affected.

Use this when your watch's settings have become corrupted or you've made configuration changes that are causing problems, and you want to start clean without losing your workout history.

Steps (all models with menu navigation):

  1. On your watch, navigate to Settings (hold the UP or MENU button, or swipe to the Settings menu on touchscreen models).
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Select Reset Settings.
  5. Confirm when prompted. The watch will apply the reset and restart.

Your activities and personal health data remain intact after this reset.

How to Factory Reset Your Garmin Watch (Delete All Data)

A factory reset — called "Delete Data and Reset Settings" on Garmin watches — erases everything: all recorded activities, sleep and health data, saved courses, personal profile, payment cards, music, and settings. The watch returns to the state it was in when first unboxed.

Back up your data first. Before performing a factory reset, open the Garmin Connect app on your phone and sync your watch. This uploads all stored activities and health data to your Garmin Connect account, where it remains accessible even after the watch is wiped. Once the factory reset is complete, that data is gone from the device — it can only be recovered if it was synced beforehand.

Steps to factory reset (all models):

  1. Navigate to Settings on your watch (hold MENU or UP button, or swipe to Settings on touchscreen).
  2. Select System.
  3. Select Reset.
  4. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings.
  5. Confirm when prompted. The watch will wipe all data and restart as a new device.

After the factory reset, the watch will display the initial setup screen asking for your language, units, and Garmin Connect pairing — the same as when it was new.

Model-Specific Reset Instructions

How to Reset the Garmin Venu SQ 2

Soft reset: Hold the side button for 10–15 seconds until the watch restarts.

Factory reset:

  1. Press the side button to access the menu.
  2. Go to Settings → System → Reset.
  3. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings and confirm.

The Venu SQ 2 does not have a separate physical reset button — all resets are performed through button holds or the Settings menu. If the screen is frozen and unresponsive to touch, hold the button for 15+ seconds until it forces a restart.

How to Reset the Garmin Vivoactive 5

Soft reset: Hold the side button for 10–15 seconds until the watch reboots.

Factory reset:

  1. Swipe to or tap the Settings icon on the watch face, or hold the side button and navigate to Settings.
  2. Go to System → Reset.
  3. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings and confirm.

If you are resetting the Vivoactive 5 before selling it, also remove it from your Garmin Connect account in the Garmin Connect app: tap the device icon → your watch → the settings gear → Remove Device.

How to Reset the Garmin Instinct 2 and Instinct 3

The Instinct series uses button-only navigation with no touchscreen. The button layout differs slightly between Instinct 2 and Instinct 3.

Soft reset: Hold the upper-left button (LIGHT on Instinct 2; LIGHT/FLASHLIGHT on Instinct 3) for 10+ seconds. The watch will reboot.

Factory reset via menu:

  1. Hold the UP button to access the main menu.
  2. Navigate to Settings → System → Reset.
  3. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings and confirm.

Factory reset via hardware method (Instinct 2): If the watch is frozen and menu navigation isn't working, hold the upper-left LIGHT button while plugging in the charging cable. Keep holding until the watch displays the reset screen, then follow the on-screen prompt. This is a hardware-level forced reset for use when the watch is completely unresponsive.

How to Reset the Garmin Forerunner 165 and Forerunner 265

Soft reset: Hold the top button for 15 seconds until the watch restarts. On both models, this forces a reboot without erasing data.

Factory reset:

  1. Hold the UP button to open the menu.
  2. Go to Settings → System → Reset.
  3. Select Delete Data and Reset Settings and confirm.

Both the Forerunner 165 and 265 will restart and display the initial setup screen after a factory reset.

Resetting Your Garmin Watch Before Selling

If you're selling or gifting your Garmin watch, a factory reset alone is not enough — you also need to unpair it from your Garmin Connect account. If you don't unpair it, the new owner may have difficulty setting up the watch under their own account.

Complete these steps in order:

  1. Sync your watch — open Garmin Connect on your phone and sync to back up all your data.
  2. Remove the watch from Garmin Connect — in the Garmin Connect app, tap the device icon (top right), select your watch, tap the gear/settings icon, and select Remove Device. This unlinks the watch from your account.
  3. Factory reset the watch — follow the factory reset steps above for your specific model (Settings → System → Reset → Delete Data and Reset Settings).
  4. Remove Garmin Pay cards if applicable — on watches with Garmin Pay, go to Garmin Connect → Garmin Pay and remove any stored cards before selling.

After these steps, the watch is completely clean and ready for the new owner to set up under their own account.

Troubleshooting: When Reset Doesn't Work

The watch is completely frozen and won't respond to button holds: Connect the watch to its charger. Most Garmin watches will respond once power is connected. Once charging, attempt the soft reset (hold the button for 15+ seconds).

Watch reboots in a loop after a factory reset: This can happen if the firmware is corrupted. Hold the button and connect to the charger simultaneously to force the watch into recovery mode. Then sync with Garmin Connect on your phone — if Garmin Express is available on your computer, connect via USB and use it to reinstall firmware.

Factory reset completed, but the watch still shows my data: If you've reset the watch but your name or data still appears, it may be that "Reset Settings" (not "Delete Data and Reset Settings") was selected. Repeat the process and ensure you select Delete Data and Reset Settings.

Watch says "Device disconnected" in Garmin Connect after reset: After a factory reset, the watch needs to be re-paired to your phone from scratch. In Garmin Connect, tap the device icon → Add Device → select your watch model, and pair again via Bluetooth.
