The Garmin Forerunner 165 launched in India in June 2023 as the first AMOLED-display watch in the entry-level Forerunner line. It brought Garmin's vivid AMOLED screen — previously reserved for the Venu lifestyle series or the more expensive Forerunner 265 — down to a more accessible price point for recreational and regular runners.
It comes in two variants: the standard Forerunner 165 and the Forerunner 165 Music, which adds offline music storage for ₹6,000 extra.
The 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen is the defining upgrade from the older Forerunner 55 and 255 (both of which use MIP displays). Vivid colours, high contrast, and excellent indoor readability make the 165 noticeably better for daily wear and at-a-glance health data. Watch faces look sharp and modern, and the touchscreen navigation works smoothly for menu browsing.
In direct sunlight, AMOLED displays can appear slightly washed out compared to MIP, but the Forerunner 165's brightness is sufficient for most outdoor running conditions.
Daily Suggested Workouts are the backbone of the Forerunner 165's coaching capability. Garmin's algorithm analyses your recent training history, current fitness level, and recovery status to recommend an appropriate workout each day — easy run, intervals, tempo, long run, or rest. This removes the guesswork for runners without a formal plan and is surprisingly effective for building structured training habits.
PacePro calculates a target pace strategy for a specific route based on elevation profile, helping you maintain consistent effort on hilly terrain without blowing up on early climbs.
VO2 Max is continuously estimated from outdoor runs and is used by the race predictor to estimate finish times for 5K, 10K, half-marathon, and marathon.
Garmin Coach provides structured training plans for 5K, 10K, and half-marathon distances, delivered as daily workouts synced directly to the watch. Useful for runners preparing for their first race.
Training Readiness is not available on the Forerunner 165 — this feature, which combines sleep, HRV, and training load into a single daily readiness score, is exclusive to the Forerunner 265 and above. This is the most meaningful gap between the 165 and 265 for serious athletes.
Running Power is also not available on the Forerunner 165. Wrist-based running power is available from the Forerunner 265 upward.
The Forerunner 165 uses standard multi-GNSS (GPS + GLONASS + Galileo) — not multi-band. For most road runners and city routes, this is entirely sufficient for accurate distance, pace, and route tracking. Under heavy tree cover or in urban canyons with tall buildings, single-band GPS can be less consistent than the multi-band system on the Forerunner 265.
GPS battery life is 19 hours — sufficient for a marathon, and all standard training runs at any distance.
11 days in smartwatch mode, 19 hours in GPS mode. In daily use with regular GPS workouts, most runners charge the Forerunner 165 approximately once a week. The 11-day battery significantly outperforms Apple Watch (1–2 days) and Samsung Galaxy Watch (2–3 days), making continuous sleep and health monitoring practical.
The only difference between the two variants is music storage. The Music edition supports offline playback from Spotify, Deezer, and Amazon Music — download playlists over Wi-Fi before a run and leave your phone at home. All other specs — display, battery, GPS, health features — are identical.
At ₹6,000 extra for the Music edition, it is worth it for most regular runners. Running without your phone is meaningfully more comfortable for long runs, and offline music keeps you on pace better than running silently. If you always run with your phone or don't run with music, the standard edition saves you ₹6,000.
Body Battery is one of the most useful daily features on the Forerunner 165. It uses heart rate variability, stress, sleep quality, and physical activity to generate a 0–100 energy score throughout the day. A high morning score (75+) indicates good recovery and readiness for a hard workout; a low score signals accumulated fatigue and the need for rest. Tracking Body Battery over time helps identify whether your training load and recovery habits are sustainable.
HRV Status provides a longer-term view of autonomic nervous system health, averaging your overnight HRV against a rolling five-week baseline to detect trends in overtraining or underrecovery.
SpO2 (Pulse Ox) monitors blood oxygen saturation — useful for altitude acclimatisation tracking and as a general health signal during sleep.
Sleep tracking records light, deep, and REM stages alongside a sleep score. Sleep quality data feeds directly into Body Battery and HRV Status calculations.
Additional: continuous heart rate, 24/7 stress monitoring, women's health tracking.

Buy the FR55 (₹18,500) if: battery life and price are your priorities, and you don't need SpO2 or an AMOLED display. The FR55 is the better endurance watch and runs longer between charges.
Buy the FR165 (₹27,990) if: display quality matters for daily wear, you want SpO2 and HRV Status, or you want the Music edition for phone-free runs. The ₹9,490 price difference buys a meaningfully better display and health tracking depth.

Buy the FR165 (₹27,990) if: you're a recreational or intermediate runner who wants an AMOLED watch with coaching tools, Body Battery, and optional music — but doesn't need Training Readiness, Running Power, triathlon mode, or multi-band GPS.
Buy the FR265 (₹40,990) if: you train with a structured plan, track Training Readiness, use power zones, or do triathlons. The ₹13,000 premium unlocks meaningfully deeper analytics that affect how you train daily.
The Forerunner 165 is the right choice if:
You want Garmin's AMOLED display under ₹35,000. It is the only AMOLED running watch in Garmin's India lineup below the Forerunner 265.
You run 3–5 times a week and want structured coaching. Daily suggested workouts, PacePro, and VO2 max give you the tools to train with intent without the complexity of the FR265's full analytics suite.
You want the Music edition for offline Spotify runs without your phone. ₹33,990 is the most affordable way into Garmin's music-capable running watch lineup.
You're upgrading from a basic fitness tracker or an older Garmin. The combination of AMOLED, Body Battery, HRV Status, SpO2, and daily coaching is a significant step up at a manageable price.
The Forerunner 165 is not the right choice if you do triathlons (no multisport mode), need Training Readiness or Running Power (step up to FR265), or prioritise maximum battery life (the FR55 lasts longer at ₹18,500).
Pros
Cons
At ₹27,990, the Garmin Forerunner 165 is the best entry point into Garmin's AMOLED running watch lineup in India.
The combination of display quality, Body Battery, HRV Status, daily coaching, and 19-hour GPS battery is a strong value at this price. For most recreational and regular runners, it delivers everything they need.
Serious athletes training for triathlons or using structured power-based plans should step up to the Forerunner 265 (₹40,990) for Training Readiness and Running Power.
If you run with music, the Music edition at ₹33,990 is worth the extra ₹6,000.
