The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is Apple's most capable smartwatch — built not for the mass market, but for people who push into territory where standard smartwatches stop working.

At ₹87,900 at Clearcals, it is a significant investment.

This review explains exactly what you get for that price, who it's genuinely built for, and where it compares to the Series 11 and leading Garmin adventure watches.

Design and Build

The Ultra 3 is a bigger, heavier watch than any other Apple Watch — 49mm case, titanium construction, flat sapphire crystal. On the wrist, it is unmistakably large. For people who prefer a statement sport watch aesthetic, it looks excellent. For smaller wrists or those used to a slim daily watch, the 49mm can feel substantial.

The grade 5 titanium case is the same alloy used in aerospace components and surgical implants — significantly stronger and more corrosion-resistant than the aluminium in the SE 3 and Series 11. The flat sapphire crystal is a hardness grade 9, resisting scratches from virtually everything except diamond. After months of trail running, climbing, and diving, the Ultra 3's case should still look clean.

The Action Button on the left side of the case is a physical, customisable button separate from the Digital Crown and side button. You can map it to start/stop a workout, trigger the dive app, set a waypoint, activate the flashlight, or several other functions — accessed instantly without navigating menus, which is valuable mid-activity with wet hands or gloves.

Natural Titanium and Black Titanium are identical in performance — the choice is purely aesthetic. Natural has a silver-grey tone; Black has a dark anodized finish. Both are available at ₹87,900.

Display

The always-on LTAO OLED display is the largest and brightest Apple Watch display that has ever shipped. Outdoor visibility in direct sunlight is excellent — particularly relevant for trail runners and trekkers checking stats in bright conditions. The flat sapphire crystal contributes to outdoor readability with minimal glare.

The larger 49mm display gives you meaningfully more room for complications and health data at a glance. For athletes checking pace, heart rate, and time simultaneously mid-workout, the bigger display is a practical advantage.

Battery Life

This is the Ultra 3's most transformative feature over the Series 11. Up to 36 hours of standard use with always-on display enabled. Up to 72 hours in Low Power Mode, which reduces display refresh and limits some sensor readings to conserve power.

In practice, this means the Ultra 3 can complete a 24-hour trail race, a full Ironman triathlon, or a two-day Himalayan trek on a single charge — scenarios where the Series 11's 18-hour battery would leave you without a watch mid-event. For anything under 18 hours, the Series 11 is equivalent. The Ultra 3's battery advantage is real and meaningful for long-duration activities; for daily use, it means charging every two days rather than every night.

GPS: Dual-Frequency Precision

The Ultra 3 uses both L1 and L5 GPS frequencies simultaneously. L1 is the standard frequency used by virtually all GPS watches. L5 is a newer, more powerful signal with better penetration in environments where GPS traditionally struggles — dense tree canopy, deep mountain valleys, and urban canyons with tall buildings reflecting GPS signals.

In practical terms, the Ultra 3's GPS is noticeably more accurate on technical trail runs, in forested terrain, and in urban canyon environments compared to standard single-frequency watches. Route traces are cleaner, distance measurements are more precise, and pace data is more stable during pace changes. For road running in open areas, the difference is minimal. For trail running in the Western Ghats or the Himalayas, it is meaningful.

The Garmin Forerunner 265, 570, and 970 also use dual-frequency L1/L5 GPS (Garmin calls it SatIQ). Both brands deliver accurate dual-frequency performance; the Ultra 3 and Garmin flagship runners are the same tier for GPS quality.

Health Features

The Ultra 3 includes the full health monitoring suite: ECG, blood oxygen (SpO2), blood pressure alerts, heart rate, HRV, sleep stages (Core, Deep, REM), and skin temperature. It is identical to the Series 11 in health sensor capability — you don't get additional health sensors by choosing Ultra over Series 11. What you get is the same sensors in a more durable, longer-lasting body.

ECG. 30-second electrical heart rhythm measurement via the Digital Crown. Detects signs of atrial fibrillation. Supported in India.

Blood oxygen. Optical SpO2 sensor for on-demand and background readings. Particularly useful at altitude, where oxygen saturation drops — relevant for trekkers in the Himalayas.

Blood pressure alerts. Passive monitoring for elevated blood pressure patterns with high BP notifications. Not a clinical measurement.

Skin temperature. Overnight wrist skin temperature tracking. Useful for detecting illness-related temperature changes and for refining menstrual cycle phase predictions.

Water and Dive Capability

The Ultra 3 is water resistant to 100m — double the 50m rating of the SE 3 and Series 11. More significantly, it is certified to EN13319 recreational dive computer standards and includes a depth gauge and water temperature sensor.

The Oceanic+ dive app is natively supported, providing dive logging, no-decompression limit alerts, dive duration tracking, and maximum depth display. The Ultra 3 is the only Apple Watch you can take recreational scuba diving. It is suitable for recreational dives up to the certified depth range — not for technical or commercial diving.

For open-water swimmers, the 100m rating and depth gauge also make the Ultra 3 comfortable for deeper open-water swims, where the 50m-rated Series 11 provides less margin.

Emergency Siren

The 86 dB siren activated via the Action Button is audible from approximately 180 metres. In an emergency in remote terrain — an injury on a trail, a fall in the mountains, or disorientation in poor weather — this is a genuine safety feature that other smartwatches don't have. Solo trekkers and trail runners in remote areas will find real value here.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Series 11: When Is the Premium Worth It?

The Ultra 3 is worth the premium if you genuinely need a 36–72 hour battery, precision GPS in challenging terrain, dive capability, or the titanium/sapphire durability. The health monitoring suite is identical to the Series 11.

If you run 5–10km a few times a week, go to the gym, and want comprehensive health monitoring, the Series 11 at ₹45,900 does everything the Ultra 3 does for health data at roughly half the price.

Apple Watch Ultra 3 vs Garmin Instinct 3 Solar

For Indian buyers comparing adventure watches, the Garmin Instinct 3 Solar (₹48,990 at Clearcals) is the most direct alternative to the Ultra 3 for outdoor and trekking use.

FeatureUltra 3 (₹87,900)Instinct 3 Solar (₹48,990)

Price₹87,900₹48,990

The Instinct 3 Solar wins decisively on battery life — 40+ days with solar charging vs 72 hours on the Ultra 3. For multi-week expeditions where charging is impossible, the Instinct 3 Solar is unbeatable. The Ultra 3 wins on display quality, dive capability, and Apple ecosystem integration. Both use dual-frequency GPS.

For iPhone users doing treks of up to a week, the Ultra 3's 72-hour battery is sufficient. For month-long expeditions, the Instinct 3 Solar is the practical choice.

Verdict

The Apple Watch Ultra 3 is the best Apple Watch ever made — and it earns that description through genuine capability rather than incremental spec bumps. The 72-hour battery is transformative for endurance athletes. The precision dual-frequency GPS is among the most accurate available on any smartwatch. The 100m dive certification is unique in the Apple Watch lineup. The titanium and sapphire build quality means you won't need to baby it.

What it is not is a necessary upgrade from the Series 11 for most buyers. The health sensors are identical. The daily experience is largely the same. You're paying ₹42,000 more for battery life, GPS precision, build quality, and dive capability — all of which are meaningful if you use them, and irrelevant if you don't.

Buy the Ultra 3 if: You run ultras, do multi-day treks, dive, compete in triathlons, or simply want the best Apple Watch without compromise. Buy the Series 11 instead if: You want advanced health monitoring for daily use without the extreme sport use case.
