How to Set Up Garmin Connect App: iPhone & Android Guide 2026

By Dr. Krishna Athmakuri, Co-Founder & CEO, Clearcals | Updated May 2026

The Garmin Connect app is the companion app for all Garmin smartwatches. It pairs your watch to your phone over Bluetooth, syncs your workout and health data, and gives you dashboards for everything your Garmin tracks — steps, heart rate, sleep, Body Battery, VO2 max, and more.

This guide covers setting up Garmin Connect on iPhone and Android, syncing with Apple Health and Google Fit, exploring the app's features, and fixing common connection issues.

What You Need Before You Start

  • Your Garmin watch (charged and turned on)
  • An iPhone (iOS 16 or later) or Android phone (Android 9.0 or later)
  • Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
  • A Garmin Connect account (free — you'll create one during setup)

Step 1: Download the Garmin Connect App

For iPhone users: Download Garmin Connect from the Apple App Store. Search for "Garmin Connect" and tap Get.

For Android users: Download Garmin Connect from the Google Play Store. Search for "Garmin Connect" and tap Install.

Once installed, open the app. Create a free Garmin account or sign in at connect.garmin.com if you already have one.

Step 2: How to Connect Your Garmin Watch to Your iPhone

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your iPhone — go to Settings → Bluetooth and toggle it on.
  2. Open the Garmin Connect app on your iPhone.
  3. Tap the device icon in the top right corner, or go to the menu and select "Add Device".
  4. The app will display a list of compatible Garmin devices. Select your watch model from the list.
  5. Follow the on-screen instructions. The app will search for your watch via Bluetooth.
  6. On your Garmin watch, navigate to Settings → Connectivity → Bluetooth and ensure it is enabled. Your watch should appear as discoverable.
  7. A pairing code will appear on your watch screen. Confirm the code on both your watch and your iPhone to complete pairing.
  8. Once paired, the app will begin an initial sync — this downloads your watch's existing data and may take a minute or two.

Your Garmin watch is now connected to your iPhone. Future syncs happen automatically whenever your watch is within Bluetooth range of your phone with the app running in the background.

Step 3: How to Connect Your Garmin Watch to an Android Phone

  1. Enable Bluetooth on your Android phone — go to Settings → Bluetooth and turn it on.
  2. Also ensure Location permission is granted to Garmin Connect (required on Android for Bluetooth device scanning — go to Settings → Apps → Garmin Connect → Permissions → Location → Allow).
  3. Open the Garmin Connect app and tap the device icon or go to Menu → Add Device.
  4. Select your watch model from the list of compatible devices.
  5. Follow the on-screen prompts. The app will search for your watch.
  6. On your Garmin watch, ensure Bluetooth is enabled in Settings → Connectivity → Bluetooth.
  7. Confirm the pairing code on both your watch and your phone.
  8. The initial sync will begin automatically once paired.

Step 4: Sync Garmin Connect with Apple Health

Syncing Garmin data to Apple Health allows all your Garmin health data — steps, sleep, heart rate, workouts — to appear in the iPhone Health app alongside data from other sources.

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app on your iPhone.
  2. Tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top left.
  3. Go to Settings → Connected Apps.
  4. Select Apple Health.
  5. Tap Connect and grant the required permissions when prompted by iOS.

Once connected, your Garmin workout and health data will sync to Apple Health after each watch sync.

Step 5: Sync Garmin Connect with Google Fit

  1. Open the Garmin Connect app.
  2. Tap the menu iconSettings → Connected Apps.
  3. Select Google Fit.
  4. Tap Connect and sign in to your Google account if prompted.
  5. Grant the requested permissions.

Garmin activity data will now appear in Google Fit after each sync.

What Can You Do with Garmin Connect?

Once your watch is paired, Garmin Connect becomes a detailed health and training dashboard. Here's what the app shows you:

Activity and Fitness View all your recorded workouts — runs, rides, swims, gym sessions — with full GPS maps, pace/split data, heart rate zones, and lap breakdowns. Track daily steps, active minutes, and calories against your personalised goals.

Health Monitoring Access your Body Battery timeline (see exactly when your energy depleted and recovered throughout the day), overnight HRV data, SpO2 readings, stress levels, and detailed sleep stages (light, deep, REM) with a daily sleep score. On newer watches like the Vivoactive 6, Sleep Coach recommendations also appear here.

Performance Analytics Track VO2 max over time to see your aerobic fitness trend. View Training Load and Training Status if your watch supports these. For running watches, access race predictor estimates, Training Readiness scores, and Running Power data on supported models.

Training Plans and Coaching Set up Garmin Coach training plans for 5K, 10K, and half marathon directly through the app — workouts are pushed to your watch for guided daily training. You can also create custom workouts and send them to your watch.

Challenges and Community Join step challenges with friends, follow other Garmin users, and compare activity stats. The social layer is light but useful for staying motivated.

Watch Face and Widget Customisation Change your watch face, reorder data screens, and customise which metrics appear on your widgets — all managed through the app's device settings.

Does Your Garmin Watch Need to Be Connected to Your Phone?

No. Your Garmin watch records activity and health data independently — GPS, heart rate, workouts, sleep, and Body Battery all work without a phone present. The phone and Garmin Connect are needed to sync your data, push updates, receive smart notifications, and access features like Garmin Pay setup or music downloads.

You can use your watch for weeks without syncing and then connect to Garmin Connect to upload all the stored data at once.

Troubleshooting: Common Connection Issues

Watch not appearing in the app:

  • Ensure Bluetooth is on for both your phone and watch.
  • On Android, check that Location permission is granted to Garmin Connect.
  • Restart both your phone and watch, then try again.
  • On your watch, go to Settings → Connectivity → Bluetooth → Remove Phone, then pair again fresh.

Watch paired but not syncing:

  • Make sure the Garmin Connect app is running in the background on your phone (not force-closed).
  • Open the app manually and pull down to refresh — this triggers a manual sync.
  • Check that Background App Refresh is enabled for Garmin Connect (iPhone: Settings → Garmin Connect → Background App Refresh → On).

Garmin Connect login not working:

  • Use the same email and password as your connect.garmin.com web account.
  • Use "Forgot Password" on the login screen if needed.
  • Garmin accounts are region-specific — ensure you're logging in through the correct regional account.

Health data not appearing in Apple Health after sync:

  • Go to Settings → Connected Apps → Apple Health in Garmin Connect and verify the connection is active.
  • On iPhone, go to Settings → Privacy → Health → Garmin Connect and ensure all data categories are toggled on.
