Track your nutrition and health goals

"Vitamin B" is a family of eight vitamins. You get most of them from a normal Indian diet that includes whole grains, dal, milk and curd, eggs, nuts, seeds and green vegetables. The one that is hard to get without animal foods is B12, which has its own guide. Folate (B9) deserves attention before and during pregnancy. If you eat polished rice and refined flour most of the time, and few pulses or vegetables, you are most likely to run short.
| Vitamin | What it does | Good Indian sources |
|---|---|---|
| B1 (thiamine) | Turns carbohydrate into energy; nerves | Whole wheat, brown or parboiled rice, dals, peanuts, sesame, sunflower seeds |
| B2 (riboflavin) | Energy; skin, eyes | Milk, curd, paneer, eggs, almonds, green leafy vegetables, mushrooms |
| B3 (niacin) | Energy; skin; digestion | Peanuts, whole grains, mushrooms, green peas, chicken, fish |
| B5 (pantothenic acid) | Energy from food, hormone production | Widely found: pulses, whole grains, eggs, curd, mushrooms, sweet potato |
| B6 (pyridoxine) | Protein use; mood; red blood cells | Chickpeas (chana), banana, potato, sunflower seeds, fish, chicken |
| B7 (biotin) | Energy; hair and nails are marketed, but evidence is limited | Eggs, nuts, seeds, sweet potato, cauliflower |
| B9 (folate) | Cell growth; red blood cells; vital in early pregnancy | Palak, methi, other greens, dals, rajma, sprouts, citrus fruit, fortified atta |
| B12 | Nerves; red blood cells | Milk, curd, eggs, fish, meat; see our B12 guide |
Folate helps prevent neural tube defects in early pregnancy, so doctors advise folic acid for women planning pregnancy, usually before conception. This is a prescribed supplement, not something to start or stop on your own. Good food sources are leafy greens, dal, rajma, chana, and citrus fruit. Cooking for long times reduces folate, so lightly cook greens.
Biotin (B7) is sold in hair and nail supplements. High-dose biotin can falsely change thyroid blood test results. If you take biotin, tell your doctor and the lab before any thyroid test. See our guide to Thyronorm and diet for more.
Most people eating varied meals do not. A multi-B tablet can mask the cause of fatigue or tingling, and it does not fix a low B12 level reliably. If you have symptoms or are in a higher-risk group, test first and let your doctor choose what to take.
Hint lets you log your Indian meals and track your intake of all the essential vitamins for free, including the B vitamins, alongside calories and protein. This shows which B vitamins your regular meals miss, such as folate on days without greens or B1 when you eat only polished rice. It estimates intake from food and does not replace blood tests or medical advice. You can also try our free Indian food calorie calculator.
